Watching street performers, fortune-tellers, taking horse-carriage rides round the lake at the El Retiro Park is another option. There's delicious tapas and food available all over the city, along with yummy sweets, chocolates and desserts.

Valencia: Festivals and fiestas abound here. The Fallas Fiesta in Valencia and the Tomatina Fiesta in Bunol are the best-known festivals here, and they provide great photo ops and the chance to meet locals and participate in the traditional customs and celebrations. The Arts and Sciences Museum in Valencia is state-of-the-art and older kids will certainly enjoy the experience, with its IMAX Theater and laserium. For a quieter time, visit the lovely del Turia gardens, with their fountains, rows of flowering trees and frequent fairs, puppet shows and exhibitions. The Mercado Central, the best market in Europe, is located here. Great food is available in this birth-place of the famous paella.

Mountain magic: The Spanish Pyrenees are a great location for your family holiday in both summer and winter. Summer attractions include biking, trekking, hiking, balloon-rides, horse-riding and all kinds of water-sports in the many rivers. Winter fun includes skiing and ice-skating and taking the cable car or funicular up and down the snow-clad slopes. Local food options include tapas, delicious fried chocolate sweets and pastries.
